A complete masonry restoration was performed on 14 historic garrison structures at The Jackson Barracks site in New Orleans, Louisiana. The restoration scope included 100% tuckpointing of the exterior masonry (45,000 sf), replacement of deteriorated brick units (42,000) and historic masonry cleaning. All work was performed per The National Park Service Historical Briefs & Guidelines. Mock-ups were performed, including full demonstration of means and methods with Owner, Architect, FEMA & SHPO representative. Replacement bricks were custom fabricated including the use of wood forms, hand pressing and historical firing techniques to ensure replication of existing brick strengths, porosity and permeability. All replacement bricks were individually documented, indicating their location on the façade for future reference.
